Scenario

After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams discovers that most of the world has fallen prey to a mysterious disease. Yet, despite his isolationist instincts, Ish leads the charge to develop a new civilization.

The novel was written in the late 1940s, after the end of World War II

The version on my shelf is copyrighted in 1947, but Wikipedia says 1949

The impact of the story is that 80 years ago someone wrote about a global pandemic and its eventual impact on people. Ish represents the reader, someone who didn’t have to watch people die, watch the news, feel the hopelessness and defeat.

It connects so much with Ozymandias’ poem

Those he meets represent the ways people can cope with such enormous losses. The frailty of man and the bravado of humanity in its accomplishments.
