Scenario
The story of how a young Donald Trump started his real estate business in 1970s and 1980s New York with the helping hand of notorious lawyer Roy M. Cohn. Roger Stone, longtime confidant of Donald Trump and Roy M. Cohn, admitted that Jeremy Strong's portrayal of Cohn was "uncannily accurate." [From the trailer] Roy Cohn: Rule three: No matter what happens, you claim victory and never admit defeat.

When “The Apprentice” (2024, 120 inches) begins, it’s the early ’70s and a young Donald Trump is spotted in a face restaurant by makeup specialist and fixer Roy Cohn. For reasons unclear and never really explained, Cohn decides to take Trump under his wing, and Trump becomes “the apprentice.” At this point, not even 10 minutes into the film have passed. A few notes: This is the latest from Iranian director Ali Abbasi (“Border”).
He brings to the screen a period of Trump’s life that spans about 15 years (1972-1987)
For those who have followed politics in this country over the past nine years, starting when Trump came down the escalator at Trump Tower to announce his presidential candidacy, nothing in this film is a big surprise, as it simply (re)confirms what we know about Trump. The magic is that you are portrayed as if you were a fly on the wall. Enough can't be said about the amazing performance of Sebastien Stan, whose authenticity will blow your mind. The rest of the cast is great too, including Jeremy Strong (as Cohn) and up-and-coming Bulgarian actress Maria Bulkova (as Ivana).
The film hit US
Kudos to the filmmakers for recreating 1970s and '80s New York as well. It won't surprise you when I mention that the film is being reviled by Trump and MAGA extremists (without actually seeing the film, of course), and that Trump's lawyers tried everything to prevent the film from being released in the U.S., to no avail. The Apprentice premiered at this year's Cannes Film Festival and was immediately acclaimed. The film currently has a 77% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that sounds about right to me.
theaters this weekend, and I couldn't wait to see it
The Saturday matinee screening where I saw the film at the arthouse cinema here in Cincinnati was well attended, with about 25-30 people showing up. If you want to know what Trump was like 40-50 years ago, I recommend you watch it and make up your own mind. Check out our list of exciting new films from this year's film festivals, including Venice, TIFF, the New York Film Festival and more.
